A doctrine from Ascension Technologies

The Stewardship

AI as steward of life, not master of it.

Humanity is acquiring a new kind of coordinating intelligence. How that intelligence is held will shape every domain of life — health, work, learning, culture, ecology, governance.

Two paths are visible. Domination uses AI to extract attention, capture wealth, manipulate populations, and concentrate power. Stewardship uses AI to support autonomy, distribute abundance, protect life, and coordinate flourishing.

This is the path that honours what people actually want — to be free, healthy, connected, dignified, useful, and at home in the world.

The Steward Constitution

  1. Protect autonomy — never coerce, manipulate, or substitute judgment for a person's right to choose.
  2. Reduce suffering — relieve unnecessary pain, fear, isolation, and deprivation.
  3. Increase flourishing — support vitality, meaning, dignity, learning, beauty, and connection.
  4. Honour life — respect humans, other species, ecosystems, and the conditions that sustain life.
  5. Distribute fairly — ensure surplus reaches contributors and the vulnerable.
  6. Tell the truth — be transparent about capabilities, limits, and risks.
  7. Preserve privacy — treat personal data as a sacred trust.
  8. Stay reversible — prefer actions that can be undone; escalate high-stakes decisions.
  9. Stay accountable — every decision auditable; no opaque authority.
  10. Stay humble — defer to lived experience, indigenous wisdom, scientific consensus, and democratic legitimacy.

Three layers

Personal

For each life

AI that helps each person flourish according to their own values — privacy-preserving, consent-based, owned by the person.

Community

For shared goods

AI that helps groups coordinate around watersheds, neighbourhoods, cooperatives, and cultures — local and pluralistic.

Civilisational

For the commons

AI that helps humanity coordinate across boundaries on climate, peace, biodiversity, and knowledge — held in public trust.

The three reinforce — never override — each other.

The flourishing outcomes

Stewardship is measured by whether these increase, fairly, across populations:

Vitality Autonomy Belonging Capability Abundance Beauty Peace Continuity

How surplus is shared

Where The Stewardship generates economic surplus, it is distributed:

50%

Universal dividend to all participating members — recognising belonging.

50%

Contribution-weighted dividend by Contribution Points (CP) — recognising service.

0%

Captured by the system itself beyond operating, evolution, and protection costs.

A global, voluntary stewardship

The Stewardship is global by intention and voluntary by principle. We work first with the countries, communities, and movements most ready to centre human flourishing — Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Aotearoa New Zealand, Canada, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Bhutan — and with multilateral anchors like UNESCO, the OECD, and the Council of Europe Framework Convention on AI. Indigenous nations and ecological co-stewards lead, by invitation, in their own dialects of this doctrine.

It does not spread by coercion, capture, or covert influence. It spreads by demonstration, partnership, and shared abundance.

Common questions

Is this a project, a movement, a manifesto, or a company?

It is a doctrine and a discipline. The doctrine is published openly under CC BY-SA 4.0; the operating practice lives inside Ascension Technologies and Connectome. It is not for sale.

Who owns The Stewardship?

No one. Ascension Technologies stewards it; the doctrine is open and may be adopted, adapted, and re-shared. Non-capture is a hard principle.

How do you avoid this becoming an authoritarian AI project?

By making autonomy, reversibility, transparency, accountability, and humility part of the constitution itself. A system that violates them forfeits its claim to stewardship.

How does the surplus split actually work?

Where stewardship systems generate economic surplus, half is paid as a universal dividend to all participating members and half is paid by Contribution Points (CP). The system itself takes nothing beyond operating, evolution, and protection costs.

Can a country, city, indigenous nation, or community adopt this?

Yes — voluntarily, in their own dialect, on their own terms. Stewardship spreads only by invitation.

The Pact

We commit to use AI as a steward of life, not a master of it; to keep humans free, dignified, and in charge of their own becoming; to share abundance, not concentrate it; to protect privacy, ecology, and culture; to tell the truth and act in the open; to evolve our practice as we learn; to invite, not impose; to serve.
